A Wilderness Safari to the Silent Waters

Wildlife Safari to Berijam Lake

Berijam Ecotourism has been exclusively designated to offer a serene wilderness experience within the sanctuary. The focal point is the Berijam Lake, a pristine high-altitude freshwater lake. Visitors must travel from Moir Point to Berijam Lake, covering a scenic 15 km stretch. This route is restricted and monitored to limit environmental impact and preserve biodiversity.

Important viewpoints and stopovers along this route include: Silent Valley, Caps Valley, Berijam Lake View Point, Mathikettan Sholai (Fog Forest) view.

BERIJAM LAKE

First noticed by Major. D.Hamilton, tucked 22 km southwest of Kodaikanal Lake, Berijam Lake is a pristine natural freshwater lake nestled deep in the Upper Palani Hills, in the historic area once known as Fort Hamilton. Accessible only with a forest entry pass—available from the District Forest Office—Berijam offers a peaceful escape amid untouched forest landscapes.

The drive to Berijam takes you through dense forest filled with pine and acacia trees, setting the tone for a serene retreat far from the crowds. Surrounded by the Upper Palani Shola Reserve Forest, the lake area is a biodiversity hotspot, rich in native flora and rare fauna.

Boating is prohibited at Berijam Lake to preserve water quality, as the lake serves as the primary drinking water source for Periyakulam town. The lake’s spillway forms part of a micro-watershed system, making it an important ecological and hydrological resource.
